November

When the Maples and Japanese maples and other broad-leaved trees are done changing color, Furano enters a second season of fall foliage. Around the time the Japanese Larch change color, snow begins to fall in the city. The contrast of snow-capped Tokachidake Mountains and the deep yellow of the forest is quite amazing.

The snow is here to stay in the city, and winter truly begins. All the flower gardens, pastures and mountains are now transformed into a white wonderland. The sight of small foot prints left on the snowy fields by squirrels and ermines remind us of the wildlife here in the northland.

Around this time, the temperature is its lowest in Hokkaido, and in Furano and other inland areas certain natural phenomena can be seen. You may encounter "Hoar frost" which is snow crystals that cover barren trees, or "diamond dust", moisture in the air that crystallizes and sparkles in the sunlight. Both of these fantastic phenomena are possible only in sub-zero temperatures.

March

When March finds its way to Furano, the snow begins to melt some days, but then it may snow again the very next day. Ski slopes and the mountains remain covered in white, but the temperature is a little warmer on the slopes and is bustling with people who want to really enjoy winter sports. The temperature during the month of March may differ 30 degrees Celsius from day to day. This continues back and forth until spring is finally here for good.
