Cherry blossoms bloom every year in early May with the lingering snow-capped mountains in the background. The Rhododendron dauricum, the flower of Furano which only grows in Hokkaido also is in bloom between May and June.

Around the time the Japanese Larch change color, snow begins to fall in the city. The contrast of snow-capped Tokachidake Mountains and the deep yellow of the forest is quite amazing. |

Around this time, the temperature is its lowest in Hokkaido, and in Furano and other inland areas certain natural phenomena can be seen. You may encounter "Hoar frost" which is snow crystals that cover barren trees, or "diamond dust", moisture in the air that crystallizes and sparkles in the sunlight. Both of these fantastic phenomena are possible only in sub-zero temperatures.

Ski slopes and the mountains remain covered in white, but the temperature is a little warmer on the slopes and is bustling with people who want to really enjoy winter sports. The temperature during the month of March may differ 30 degrees Celsius from day to day. This continues back and forth until spring is finally here for good. |
